Our vision for the future is a place where we all get a lot more by using a lot less.
That’s why CommScope took a leading role in establishing landmark voluntary agreements with top industry organizations to improve set-top energy efficiency in the US and Canada. This week, three of them published their insights into the impact of these initiatives across North America.
The NCTA and CTA shared an annual report by independent auditor D+R, which found that our Set-Top Box (STB) Voluntary Agreement saved US consumers approximately $1.6 billion in energy costs and spared 28.6 million metric tons of CO2 emissions in 2018, while reducing the national set-top energy consumption by 39 percent annually over six years — the equivalent of more than $5 billion in electricity.

They also announced that a whopping 99.6 percent of all small network equipment sold in the US in 2018 met the guidelines set out by our Voluntary Agreement for Ongoing Improvement to the Energy Efficiency of Small Network Equipment (US SNE VA). The program has reduced power usage by 66% in delivering broadband to more than 87 million US homes since the agreement took effect in 2015.
Meanwhile, the Canadian Energy Efficiency Voluntary Agreement for Set-Top Boxes (CEEVA) announced that an impressive 97 percent of set-tops purchased by participating service providers met the agreement’s rigorous “Tier 2” energy efficiency levels, as outlined in its second annual report by D+R. This resulted in a huge 13 percent reduction in energy consumption in 2018 vs the previous year.
CommScope provided the technical input to establish these important industry agreements, and we continue to collaborate with our customers in North America to stay at the forefront of compliance.
It’s all part of what we call Conservation through Innovation. Together with our partners around the world, we’re constantly reducing our industry’s environmental footprint, as we continue to deliver the future of cable to the US, Canada, and beyond.
